The islands bacame a British Protectorate in 1916, being named the Gilbert islands. howecer the Japanese invaded during WWII, re-locating the population. They were returned to their Islands in the 1960s, before gaining their independence in 1979 and renaming the group, Kiribati.

Much of Kiribati art is heavily influenced by the ocean and it's creatures- from the sharktooth blade swords to the intricate sea charts found on this page.
