In 1897, Tuvalu, then the Ellis Islands, became a British protectorate, gaining independence again in 1978. However due to the remoteness and lack of material resources, Tuvalu has little European influence.
The people of Tuvalu follow a predominantly subsistance, non-materialistic lifestyle. Intricate ornamental weaving and carving are the main forms of material expression. |
