Masks are the most prolific form of art in Vanuatu, possibly having ancient links with the cultures of New Guinea. Sculptured figures, often brightly painted, also appear frequently. Some Sculptures reach 3m in height.

These carvings are predominantly made of wood, but masks are often formed from vegetable pulp. Human faces are also carved into huge stone boulders and cliffs for supernatural purposes.
